Fakrell really works well in the top four in different situations. With Za’Darius Smith’s ability to break through, the most common formations are Preston Smith and Kyler Fackrell outside, with Za’Darius Smith and Kenny Clark inside. But you will see how Pettine uses different fronts and different views to surprise the opposing defenders.

The advantage of Fakrell is that he is in a hurry, if Green Bay wants to distract him from the edge, he does an excellent job retreating into the coverage area, and he is a really good spy against mobile defenders. In fact, he is exactly what Mike Pettin needs in such scenarios.

Pettine will need to pick his spots when he uses these formations, of course. If he uses them on earlier descents, Seattle will most likely try to launch him right into Green Bay, and it is here that Fakrell and this particular front can fight. But expect there will be many fronts with four people with Fakrell included in the obvious passing falls, and don’t be surprised if Kyler comes in several times to spy on Wilson and try to keep him in his pocket.

Below you can see the many different fronts that Mike Pettin used against Chicago and Mitch Trubiski to try and keep him in his pocket. Now this goes without saying, but of course Russell Wilson and Mitch Trubiski are not the same quarterback, but this does not change the fact that Green Bay wanted to try to restrain Trubiski and keep it in his pocket as much as possible.

In the clip you can see the versatility that Pettine provides. Preston, Za’Darius and Kyler are all capable of retreating and spying, and, of course, all three can effectively escape at any moment. Green Bay can also bring extra pressure or cause a standard peak of four. It gives Green Bay plenty of options, and it should at least give Russell Wilson something to think about on the scrum line.

It is also worth noting how well Fakrell played against Seattle in 2018. Fakrell had three sacks in this game, and he would have had the fourth if Wilson had not passed obvious attention with a shovel, bypassing the line of battle. He was also active against running and beat back to Wilson. Perhaps this was the best performance in Fakrell’s career.

With Za’Darius, Preston, & Clark experiencing so much pressure on their own, Pettin loved using Kyler Fakrell as a spy against mobile quarterbacks. And you know who had a fantastic game against Seahawks last season … Kyler Fakrell! It may be a legitimate x-factor in the game.

Green Bay may be a favorite in a Sunday match with Seattle, but to win they need everyone to go on stage and play a big role. Kyler Fakrell is in a fantastic position, and could just be a watershed moment for Mike Pettin Sunday night.
